Dr. Tamás Sulyok, President of Hungary, awarded the Hungarian Corvin Chain to Nobel Prize-winning researchers Katalin Karikó and Ferenc Krausz.
In his welcome speech at the ceremony in Sándor Palace, the Head of State underlined that both laureates had achieved extraordinary and significant scientific breakthroughs with their discoveries.
Dr. Tamás Sulyok stressed that hard work, decades of professional challenges, sacrifices and struggles have finally yielded results, as both individuals reached a pinnacle in this world that few people ever achieve.
According to President Sulyok „For us Hungarians, their accomplishments are a source of great pride, for our country and for every Hungarian – in Hungary or abroad – a source of great honour”.
Dr. Tamás Sulyok pointed out that Katalin Karikó and Ferenc Krausz are not only great scientists and outstanding human beings, but also true Hungarians, and it is therefore fitting and necessary that their country should award them one of its highest honours.
Katalin Karikó promised to do her utmost to support the scientific work pursued at domestic universities and to encourage the researchers of the future to remain loyal to their trade.
Ferenc Krausz said thank you for „the honour and love that words can hardly express”, and highlighted the determining role his teachers played in setting him off on a path of scientific research.
