A resident of Szeged and a Szeged lawyer – a member of the local community - Dr. Tamás Sulyok at the ceremony of the Szeged Bar Association

Dr. Tamás Sulyok, President of Hungary, who attended the celebration of the 150th anniversary of the establishment of the Szeged Bar Association, also spoke about his personal connection to the Bar in his welcome speech.

The Head of State said that, as a former lawyer from Szeged, he was returning home and felt a part of the local community himself.
According to the President of Hungary, the establishment of a unified and independent legal profession was an important milestone in the 19th century development of a state based on citizenship. Dr. Tamás Sulyok said that Hungary's lawyers were able to make the noble ideals of law, such as the right to defence, the principle of equality of arms and the presumption of innocence, a reality in everyday life.

According to the Head of State, the legal profession is cool, creative and very human at the same time. Lawyers are at home in the most diverse areas of the law, they are able to adapt legal principles to the realities of practical life, and they support their clients with compassion and patience.

The President of Hungary concluded by saying that it was a privilage to express his highest respect for the profession and the work of lawyers in his favourite city, as Hungary’s Head of State.
