Press release from Sándor Palace
Last week, the National Assembly adopted several important acts, including those on the exemption from duty of real estate purchased with the home ownership subsidy scheme CSOK Plus, the digital state, the right to additional leave for people with children and on Hungarian architecture.
The President of Hungary has received domestic and foreign several requests concerning the Act on the Protection of National Sovereignty. The messages received from abroad prove that the objective set by the National Assembly is appropriate: we must defend our constitutional identity and sovereignty. However, there have been many objections as regards the wording of the Act. It must be made clear that the scope of the investigations of the office to be set up must be interpreted in accordance with the Fundamental Law. The Office for the Protection of Sovereignty will only fulfill its mission as defined in the Fundamental Law if its activities do not affect the freedom of the press or the freedom of expression. The President of Hungary has ordered the promulgation of the law.
However, the President of Hungary has used her veto power to refer to the Constitutional Court the Act on the sustainable development of certain elements of cultural heritage. Although the concept of "adoption" of state-owned palaces is a supportable one, the provisions of the law allow for private ownership without the legislator having fully defined the guarantee rules ensuring adequate protection for the national heritage.
