Indispensable guardians of the legal order - 150 years of the Budapest Bar Association
The Budapest Bar Association celebrated the 150th anniversary of the establishment of the unified order of the legal profession int he capital city in the presence of Dr. Tamás Sulyok, the President of Hungary. The event took place at the National Museum in Budapest.
In his speech, the President of Hungary stressed that the establishment of the Bar Association marked the beginning of a new era in Hungary. The time has come for the independence and standardisation of the legal profession, for a predictable legal order and for the free exercise of the legal profession.
In his speech, the Head of State pointed out that "in the 21st century, too, we affirm that lawyers are the guarantors of the rule of law and the indispensable guardians of the legal order." Lawyers play a key role in making equality before the law, the right to defense, and the presumption of innocence a reality.
The President of Hungary said that that being a lawyer also entails a moral aspect, because by remaining faithful to the Fundamental Law and upholding the law, lawyers are safeguarding the purity of the legal order.
Dr. Tamás Sulyok emphasized that the well-known and lesser-known figures of the Hungarian legal profession have proven their excellence countless times throughout history.
The President of Hungary wished all members of the Budapest Bar Association successful endeavours in safeguarding the rule of law in Hungary and in the defence of their clients.
