It is important to prevent the escalation of the war in Ukraine - Katalin Novák at the WEF in Davos
It is very important to avoid a third world war and to prevent the escalation of the conflict, said President of Hungary Katalin Novák on Wednesday morning at a panel discussion at the World Economic Forum in Davos.
Asked by the moderator of the discussion whether EU support for Ukraine should be continued, Katalin Novák stressed that Ukraine must be supported against Russia in the future as well, and that Hungary will continue its support, too.
NATO and the European Union are not at war at the moment, and we must avoid becoming militarily involved in the conflict. It is very important to make sure that we can continue to live in a peaceful and secure country," said Katalin Novák.
Asked whether Ukraine can win this war and whether a Ukrainian victory is necessary to maintain European security, Katalin Novák said: Russia must not win.
The Hungarian Head of State stressed that she has always made it clear that Russian aggression must be condemned and it must be made clear which side is the aggressor and which is the one that has been attacked.
"It is clear that Russia has crossed the Rubicon", said President Novák. She added that Hungary - due to its geographical location and the Hungarian minority living in Ukraine - is not only indirectly but also directly affected by Russian aggression.
War and aggression can never be a solution, she said, stressing that Ukraine has put a peace plan on the table, which also Hungary has joined, and that we must work to make sure that peace is achieved.
