Open Days at the Sándor Palace - 17-18 September 2022 

During the programme series titled „Cultural Heritage Days” the gates of Sándor Palace will open to the public again.

Open days: 
- 17 September 2022 (Saturday): between 13.00-18.00 
- 18 September 2022 (Sunday): between 10.00-18.00

Did you know that Sándor Palace was built on the foundations of a Franciscan monastery and a later added barracks? Contrary to what people thought at the time, these structures had not been completely demolished during the construction of the palace. The new, elegant and refined yet puritanical building was built into and on top of them.

The driveways were originally covered with wooden blocks to prevent the noise of iron-wheeled carriages and iron horseshoes from waking the palace's inhabitants. By today, the wooden blocks have been replaced by porphyry cobblestone pavers of the same size.

The symmetrical counterpart of the main staircase is the Round Salon. One of the interesting features of the interior design, composed to match the round space, is the pair of marble sculptures by József Engel placed in the wall niches. The sculptor, who studied in England and Italy, portrayed the event of transformation from maiden to woman through the allegorical myth of The Huntress in the Snare.

The Red Salon is interesting in two ways. In the full-length painting of Maria Theresa, the Empress is shown in the dress in which historians believe she was crowned. According to legend, one of the four perfectly identical settees in the Red Salon was donated by Maria Theresa, and later three copies were made. Which is the original? The only way to find out is to sit on all four of them.
